A passing score on the US Border Patrol Entrance Examination is 70, but your goal should be to score in the 90's. There are three sections to the exam.

How to Get Border Patrol Jobs in Texas

One of the most extensive areas covered by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is Texas. Because of its huge land area, the state is served by various Border Patrol Sectors. The Big Bend Sector, Del Rio Sector, El Paso Sector, Laredo Sector, and Rio Grande Valley Sector work to prevent the entry of illegal aliens from Mexico to the United States and the smuggling of drugs and other contraband. In 2011, the Texas sectors were able to make 125, 821 apprehensions; seize 1,329,019.77 pounds of marijuana; and seize 4494.83 pounds of cocaine.

Border Patrol Agents and other CBP Officers have to keep watch in various ports of entry and Border Crossing Stations located in each sector. For the Big Bend Sector, the Border Crossing Stations are located in Van Horn, Alpine, Sierra Blanca, Amarillo, Sanderson, Big Bend, Presidio, Fort Stockton, Pecos, Lubbock, Midland, and Marfa. The Border Crossing Stations in Del Rio Sector are located Uvalde, Carrizo Springs, Rocksprings, Abilene, San Angelo, Comstock, Eagle Pass, Brackettville, Llano, and Del Rio. The Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Crossing Stations are in Harlingen, Weslaco, Fort Brown, Brownsville, Kingsville, Rio Grande City, Falfurrias, McAllen, and Corpus Christi.  

There are also numerous air, land, and sea ports of entry in Texas. There are 7 user fee airports. These are: Addison Airport, Alliance Airport, Midland, McKinney, Sugarland, Valley International Airport, and Houston Airport (Service Port). Other ports of entry are located in Amarillo, Austin, Brownsville/Los Indios, Corpus Christi, Dallas/Ft. Worth (Service Port), Del Rio/Amistad Dam, Eagle Pass, El Paso (Service Port), Fabens, Freeport, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas, Houston Sea Port, Laredo (Service Port), Lubbock, Port Arthur-Beaumont, Port Lavaca-Point Comfort, Presidio, Progreso/Donna, Rio Grande City/Los Ebanos, Roma/Falcon Dam, Sabine, and San Antonio. All these ports of entry make Texas one of the most fertile grounds for Border Patrol jobs.

If you apply for Texas Border Patrol jobs, you first need to see if you pass the following qualifications: 

  1. Possess U.S. Citizenship
  2. Be under 40 years old at the time of appointment
  3. Have a valid Texas driver’s license
  4. Possess the required education and/or experience
  5. Pass the hiring process. 

At the entry level, you need to have a bachelor’s degree if you want to use education to qualify. If you want to use experience to qualify, you need to have at least one year of work experience which shows your ability to take charge, make decisions, and maintain composure in stressful situations; your experience must demonstrate an ability to maintain interpersonal relationships with coworkers and the public and a propensity to learn law enforcement regulations, methods and techniques both on the job and through formal instruction. The work experience does not have to be related to law enforcement.

The hiring process involves a thorough background investigation. The CBP hiring team will investigate your criminal history, employment, and credit records. If you have a felony conviction or a misdemeanor conviction of a crime involving domestic violence, you will automatically be disqualified from further consideration. Firings from previous employment (with cause) and a derogatory credit history may also be grounds for disqualification, although these will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

You also need to pass a written Border Patrol Entrance Examination which tests your logical reasoning skills and Spanish abilities. If you already know how to speak the language, you will take the Spanish language test. However, if you don’t, you will take an Artificial Language test which will measure your ability to learn Spanish. If you want to be a Border Patrol Agent in Mexico, understanding and knowing how to speak the language is essential.

You also need to hurdle the physical fitness test, drug screen, medical evaluation, polygraph test, and oral board interview so you can get hired. All new recruits who are able to successfully pass all the requirements of the CBP will be sent to the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM for 58 days of training. Only those who are able to get passing grades in all the courses, finish the second physical fitness test, and pass the firearms training will be assigned to become a Border Patrol Agent in Texas.
