The Customs and Border Protection, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, is tasked with protecting the borders of the United States and ensuring that terrorists and their weapons do not gain entry to our homeland. To do this, they need to employ dedicated agents who work tirelessly day to keep our families and country safe.

A career as a border patrol agent is not easy but offers GREAT rewards. If you want to join, here are the pros and cons of being a border patrol agent so you can truly decide if this is the profession for you.

Pros of Being a Border Patrol Agent

  1. You enjoy higher than average starting pay and a competitive benefits package. Since you are a Federal employee, you enjoy generous retirement packages, health and life insurances, paid leaves, as well as other benefits.
  2. You receive specialized training at the Border Patrol Academy before you are sent on official duty. Here, you will become proficient at the law, physical fitness, the use of firearms, and intensive vehicle operation which will not only make you effective in your work but keep you safe as well.
  3. If you enjoy being outdoors, you’ll love this job, especially since the areas you will be assigned are largely unspoiled.
  4. If interested, you can advance to the ranks of leadership.
  5. You are doing a job that not only protects those who live in the border but U.S. citizens as a whole. You’re keeping your own family safe when you faithfully do your job.

Cons of Being a Border Patrol Agent

  1. Border patrol may be beautiful but it can be dangerous, especially at night which is the preferred time for many illegal entrants to find a way to cross in to the United States. If these illegals were only trying to get to the U.S. in search for a better life, they wouldn’t be as dangerous but border patrol agents regularly encounter and have even been killed by drug smugglers and gang members.
  2. Some patrol areas cannot be accessed by any type of vehicle so border patrol agents have to use either a horse or patrol on foot. The latter becomes a challenge if a chase unfolds and speed is required.
  3. Agent jobs are highly sought after! Getting hired is not easy.  The requirements are tedious and not all those who really want to become agents make it. The physical fitness tests and other steps in the hiring process are designed to challenge you. It is for the protection of our country that entrance requirements are high, yet attainable.
