It is a tough mandate, indeed, and agents are often required to work long hours, in tough terrain, and under dangerous circumstances. Thus, aside from the mental toughness required of all Border Patrol Agents, they also have to be physically capable of carrying out the duties every day. They have to be alert and on their feet all the time which requires good health and physical fitness. Border Patrol Agents are often required to conduct their patrols on foot if they are assigned in borders that are inaccessible by car, ATV, or horseback. Chasing illegal aliens are just a regular part of the job.The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency is tasked with one of the toughest mandates among all law enforcement agencies: That of preventing the entry of terrorists and their weapons into our lands. CBP Officers, Air and Marine Interdiction Agents, Border Patrol Agents, and Agriculture Specialists are responsible for protecting the 1,900 miles of our border with Mexico and the 5,000 miles of our border with Canada; ensuring that only lawful cargo and passengers enter the more than 300 ports of entry in the country; and preventing the spread of harmful pests and plant diseases as well as bio-terrorist and agro-terrorist threats.
If you want to be part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, you have to be physically fit. Cardiovascular endurance, strength, and stamina are all necessary not only to meet the rigors of the job but to even get into the U.S. Customs Border Protection in the first place. In the course of the selection process, you will be subjected to two physical fitness tests—one to qualify and the other before you can graduate from the Border Patrol Academy—and as such you need to be in the best of shape to become a full-fledged member of the U.S. Border Protection agency.
Aside from your capability to engage in strenuous physical activity, all your other faculties must be working as well. You must have normal color vision. You should not be color blind and must possess normal peripheral vision and depth perception. You should have at least 20/100 vision in one eye without corrective lenses. But refractive surgical modification may be acceptable if vision is not subject to any surgical distortion aftereffects. Normal hearing is also necessary. Both ears must have hearing that falls within the 500 to 2000 Hz range.
If you are currently not in the best of shape but have strong plans to enter the CBP then you can start your physical training regimen as early as now. The easiest and most convenient way to do so is to start a walking program. Begin by walking just 15 minutes a day and increase that gradually until you are able to walk for an hour. If you are already up to it, a starting jogging program is also beneficial. Strength training 2 to 3 times per week is also recommended. Before you undertake any physical fitness program, be sure to consult your doctor so that you know if you have previously undiagnosed conditions that might affect your health if you train rigorously.
