Farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes make up the geography of the area which sits in contrast with the buildings, traffic, and urbanity of New York City. The state shares an international border with the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec in its western and northern sections. This boundary is largely made up of water—Lake Erie; Lake Ontario; Saint Lawrence Seaway (western portion); and the Niagara River. CBP agents are vital in these areas! They protect the borders from becoming entry points for terrorists and their weapons; from illegal migrants; from smuggled goods; and from illegal drugs.
There are 11 ports of entry in New York. Of these, the most popular perhaps is the John F. Kennedy International Airport. There is also a user-fee airport in Binghamton and two service ports in Buffalo and Champlain. Other ports of entry are found in Albany, Alexandria Bay, Massena, Ogdensburg, Rochester, Syracuse, and Trout River. There are also six stations here: Buffalo Station, Erie Station, Niagara Falls Station, Oswego Station, Rochester Station, and Wellesley Island Station.
If New York Border Patrol jobs appeal to you then you can apply for openings at the USAJOBS (www.usajobs.gov) website, provided that you meet the basic qualification requirements. These are: 1) U.S. Citizenship; 2) Be under 40 years of age; 3) Meet the three-year residency requirement in the U.S. or its protectorates or territories; 4) Have a valid New York driver’s license; and 5) Meet the education and/or experience requirements. A bachelor’s degree is required for those who want to use education to qualify. Ideally, a degree in criminal justice or related course helps prepare you for this career. If using experience to qualify, the work (whether paid or not) should showcase your ability to stay composed and make rational decisions while under pressure.
Once you have submitted your application package for a vacancy through USAJOBS, the next hurdle is passing the entrance examination and physical fitness test, which if you’re in shape, you can certainly do! How you will perform here will determine if you will be tentatively selected for the position. Other aspects in the selection process that you must pass with flying colors are drug testing, medical evaluation, polygraph exam, background checks, and the oral interview. Should you hurdle these without any problems, you will be given an offer of employment subject to successfully passing the course and training requirements at the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM. All new recruits are sent for law enforcement training at the academy for 58 days. After passing the academy will you be sent to your first duty station in New York!
